Two college-age men ended up in the hospital this weekend after two separate assaults allegedly took place in downtown State College in the early-morning hours Sunday. Each of the young men sustained head injuries serious enough to require medical treatment.

According to a report in the Centre Daily Times, the first assault took place at approximately 2:05 a.m. at the intersection of East Fairmount Avenue and South Allen Street. A group of men were fighting, and one college-age man was punched in the face. He suffered a serious cut on his face and was taken to Mount Nittany Medical Center. Although State College police were apparently on the scene, the Times did not say whether any of the men involved had been arrested.

Another fight apparently took place about five minutes later on the 200 block of East Calder Way. In that case a young man of approximately college age was hit in the head and was taken to Mount Nittany for treatment. Again, the Times did not specify whether assault charges were brought against anyone involved in the fight.

Penn State student admits lying about alleged sexual assault during April concert

On Friday, the Times reported that a 19-year-old Penn State student has been charged with making a false police report, a misdemeanor, after falsely claiming to have been sexually assaulted during a concert on April 26. University police say that the young woman admitted lying about the assault during questioning two days after her initial police report. She had apparently been intoxicated when she made the report on the night of the concert and admitted the truth when confronted with inconsistencies in her statement.

A preliminary hearing on the false report had been scheduled for Wednesday of last week, but the young woman waived the hearing.
